Address: | About EPPThe Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) is a modern, robust and flexible protocol for communication between domain name registries and registrars. At the moment there are many registries that have their own protocols for access to the domain name database, and many of these protocols had even been patented. EPP is created to be a single standard to provide an opportunity for interaction between multiple registries and registrars based on software that operates in uniform manner in accordance with the protocol. EPP has been adopted by a number of gTLD and ccTLD domain name registries. What are the advantages of EPP? The EPP protocol, unlike the others (e.g. RRP) is based on XML (Extensible Markup Language) - a structured text-based format. Hierarchical structure of XML commands provides unquestionable flexibility and power as in the software implementation as in the prospects for expanding protocol demanded by changing conditions. There is no doubt that changes need to occur in the protocol: the world, the Internet, the needs and demands are all changing and therefore the protocols will change too. The EPP originally designed to service the needs of thick registry that require contact information for centralized whois services. Therefore, an EPP registrar is allowed to create contact objects in the registry and associate them to domains. Also worth mentioning such features as data localization: multilinguility and regional formats have been implemented in the EPP protocol. The world is already on the halfway to the introduction of EPP protocol as a common standard of communication between registries and any party of the domain name registration and management process. We think this is inevitable, and we need to keep it in mind today. | |||
